Top 10 most naive and simple questions about working abroad

Top 10 most naive and simple questions about working abroad.

Employment abroad, or as it often called labor migration, is a familiar phenomenon for mankind. Man always searched for the better and moved in better places. As a result and due to this resettlement there appeared such countries as USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc. Following this settlement a large number of Chinese, North Koreans and citizens of the CIS south-eastern countries appeared in Russia simply because standards of living and salaries in their countries are lower than in Russia. At the same time they couldn’t move further because of visa restrictions. For this reason, at the moment and after 70 years of the “Iron Curtain” when the borders have finally been opened for us, the flow of Russian citizens migrating abroad is rapidly increasing every year.  The reasons and quality of our compatriot’s migration are also changing. More and more Russian engineers, scientists and other specialists are moving abroad, less people are involved in fraudulent schemes of leaving preferring state programs and professional agencies. Better money and high salaries are not always the main reason for leaving. People are looking for safety, stability and confidence in the future and the quality of life which is impossible in a country with a constant risk of being poisoned by counterfeit alcohol or medicine. We receive a large number of letters every day with questions about working abroad, opportunities and salary ranges. We’ve selected top 10 most frequently asked and at the same time naive questions. Our director Mr. Eugene Matveyevich Mikhailov gave us the answers.

-          Do they need me there?

We’d better put the question in another way: Do you need this? The fact that you are the citizen of the country with one of the highest levels of education and culture undoubtedly attracts the attention of foreign employers. Of course they need you! The need you in the service sector in any country without exception, especially in countries like Greece where nine of ten citizens have higher education or Spain with a highly developed Tourism sector. It means they have ‘heads’, but ‘hands’ are in a high demand. They also need you in countries open to labor migration, for example, in Great Britain which implements state program  to attract highly qualified specialists ( doctors, teachers and engineers) or Australia or New Zealand where the government has prepared several programs to attract specialists, especially to sparsely populated areas. They need you and only you decide you need them or not, and the faster you decide, the sooner you can integrate into western society.

-          How much do they pay?

It depends on  the economic level of the country and your skills. But again, let’s ask another question: how much money you have after all the expenses paid? Let’s say, your salary in England can reach 3000 pounds but the living in the country is expensive and there will be only half left with you. In Greece housekeepers are paid about 800 dollars, but the owners pay for their living and food etc., and practically save all the money with them. The average index shows that payment ranges abroad are 18 times higher than in Russia.

-          If I don’t speak their language?

-          Firstly, most jobs don’t require that. Service staff is working with Russian speaking supervisor, highly qualified specialists are provided with an interpreter. But we highly recommend everyone who wants to work abroad to start studying English, Spanish or Greek. For instance, we have language courses in our agency. Learning a foreign language will give you a chance to get a better job and help you to settle down in a new place.

-          If I’m a student or my age is over 50?

-          Of course there are age limits, sometimes the employers require older employee to have an experience and adult seriousness. For students there are special summer programs, such as Work and Travel USA, Work and Travel Alaska (for ex. in Alaska they pay $ 900 per week), Work and Travel France as well. For young people in general, there are long-term programs: Au Pair, work on cruise liners or in Egypt. South European  countries (Italy or Greece)  are employing waiters, nurses and nannies between 25-55 .

-          What are my guarantees against deception? How to avoid fraud?

Be very attentive. Unfortunately, we know that many scammers still "work" in this business. The very first thing that needs to  be checked is whether this company has worked for a long time and what kind of recalls it has. Note!! It’s important to check company’s license for employment abroad and verify its authenticity in the local branch of the Federal Migration Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. Beware of individuals. Better spend the required money on yourself or your family.

-          Why there is a common knowledge that only slavery and prostitution are waiting for us abroad?

-          Well, you know, this idea has been lobbied for a long time and sponsored by those who are interested in keeping you here working for peanuts. Talk to teachers, doctors, engineers – it’s a slavery. Read some newspapers with advertising services for leisure or visit Moscow Tverskaya street - it's prostitution. About working abroad… Slavery? Who is going to sell you? Try to read foreign newspapers, communicate through social networks. In the UK, for instance, it’s not allowed for police to carry weapons. There is no need in this. There is no crime. And according to the results of recent social polls of the Russian-speaking population in Greece, the main reason for their unwillingness to return home is security. They are not afraid to let their children go to the supermarket for ice cream at night because they can be sure that nothing will ever happen to them.

-          Which countries are better to go to?

USA (including Alaska), Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. These are the countries with the most favorable migratory climate. Although you can go to any country you want, depends on your wishes and dreams.

-          For how long can I go there? Can I stay there?

From two months to several years. You can find immigration programs made for families for permanent relocation.

-          Is it worth it?

-          It’s up to you. Once in Norway I’ve heard a very nice example of "hot Scandinavian" humor: if you look like a photograph in your passport – it’s time for you to go on vacation. For you, my dear compatriots: if you hate Monday mornings and stopped smiling every morning – it’s time for you to decide, maybe it’s worth it? Find money and leave. You will earn this money back in a month and a half. You will live in a comfortable apartment, receive a decent payment for your work, and no one will raise his voice on you. You will become a completely different person.

-          What else do I need to take with me?

-          To work abroad you must be at least 18 years old and have a passport.  The agency will do the rest for you. It will also give you recommendations about stuff you need to take with you. For those who are traveling in summer: don’t buy summer closes and shoes here. This stuff is far cheaper abroad. For those who are leaving for a long time (maybe forever): don’t take your furniture with you, better buy new things there, it will cost cheaper It’s going to be a different life in which you will need completely different things.
